How do people with 15,20, even 30 (!) years stay in the company and avoid these layoffs? Staying at a certain GL? Moving from one area to another?

Read your severance package carefully before signing it. According to former employees that were laid off, they had a hard time receiving unemployment. Severance pay might reduce your benefit amount or make you ineligible.
