Quiet layoffs

This wasn’t a mass layoff like the one in January, but a few one offs occurred today. My manager and our 2 leads had their roles eliminated today, we were told the news at 4:30pm. Only thing the AVP said was their roles had been eliminated after a thorough review of everyday duties. As if we weren’t already short handed, now the rest of us will be drowning.

Beauty Merchandiser Layoffs

I've heard that the beauty merchandiser positions at many stores are being cut. I don't know exactly how true this is throughout the company, but it is certainly true for our store. Our beauty merchandiser was moved to another position, and the beauty merchandiser position was cut. From what I heard, the position may still exist at a small number of stores, but that most of the positions are being cut.

Again, this is just what I have heard. If you have more information, please post it to inform others. I just wanted to give everyone, especially current beauty merchandisers, a heads up just in case.

No one is safe

Laid off this week. Was remote. Role being moved to one of 2 hubs. Trust no one. I was GL 17+. I shouldn't be surprised as I have seen this happening in pockets even though I was told not to worry.

Re-org at Strategy & Transformation. Head of UX Design dismissed!

Head of UX Design at Strategy & Transformation was dismissed this week. Role terminated immediately. He clearly won’t be missed considering his reputation and poor legacy. What other senior roles at S&T were impacted this week?

What is happening?!

I’ve been with USB over 20 years and it’s easy to pick up when the vibe is off. These last 5 months or so leadership is turning cold shoulders at all levels. Staying to their own peers, head down in what feels like hush hush strategies. I’m seeing high performing, grandfathered remote colleagues “role eliminated” only to be reopened in a hub. You can feel something afoot and it’s maddening because it almost feels like leaders were told to be just shy of overt in how they are interacting these day. I’m not looking for gripe on the company, I’m looking for others who can share what they are seeing in their departments. Is it the same? What do you know? What have you heard? Cause something is swirling behind the scenes here!

RIF selection process

The criteria for every RIF is usually different. It starts out with getting a list using some generic criteria. They do this for legal reasons, so they can legally justify that the RIF applied to a group of people and someone was not being singled out or discriminated against. Examples of lists in the past, anyone who worked remote (pre-Covid), anyone who got less than a 3 on their review, any manager with less than 5 reports, or any director that is lower than 5 levels deep. As a manager, you need to be cautious about how you answer any surveys about your employees. For example, once they asked about employee roles and if a QA was a manual tester or automated tester. A couple months later all the manual testers were on the list.

Once the generic list is created, it is shared with managers to a certain level. Sometimes the immediate manager is informed of who is is on the list but sometimes they are not. The managers who get to see the list than have to fight to get someone off and that fight isn't easy. If they do manage to win, they often then need to supply a different name.

All in all, there is usually a financial target they are trying to hit and that can impact how the list is created as well. Products they want to disinvest in will have more people on the list than products that they think will be the next big thing.

I found this informative. OP: @aw+1kakcej6y

Cengage has become the joke of the industry

Cengage has gone so far down hill in my 15 years with the company. I used to feel like they actually cared about their employees. I am no longer proud to work here. Why are we not paying a livable wage? Why are we expecting so much out of people who make equal to someone making your fast food order?
What happened to company picnics and showing appreciation to your employees during the busiest time of year? WHY ARE ELEVATE POINTS SO HARD TO GET??? Then when you do get some the amount is just offensive. Cengage eliminated some very important roles and everyone left after is expected to just stay positive and figure it out. What happened to white glove service? Why is there no support or true leadership for the employees? PAY US MORE. stop eliminating roles just to bring people back with a new title and less pay. The customer support over seas is not working either. Bring the jobs back to the US. This company is just getting worse and worse by the day.

A message for our team

Team,

Today is a difficult day for all of us at Target. Earlier this morning, I shared with team members whose roles are being eliminated that today is their last day of work.

For the group receiving this email, you and your role remain at the company.

These are incredibly hard decisions and today carries enormous weight for everyone – especially our colleagues who are leaving. We’re committed to supporting all departing team members as they make this transition, including severance packages, benefits, career services and well-being resources.

These changes aren’t easy. And we know they’re necessary to reduce complexity, remove barriers and create the clarity and speed we need to grow and better serve our guests. To get there, we’ll need to continue the change – working in different ways, with renewed focus and effectiveness to deliver for our guests as we move into Q4.

In the next day, you’ll hear from your leader to learn what these changes mean for your team specifically and how to move through the next few weeks. We’ll all need to balance adjusting to what’s new, while keeping absolute focus on the business-critical work.

We will continue to stay anchored in our culture and move forward with purpose – keeping the guest at the center of what we do. I’m confident that, together, we will build a Target that’s positioned to win and grow well into the future.

With gratitude,
Melissa

Returned from FMLA for High Cost Health Condition and Just Before 20 Years of Service

Anyone else?
I've read several posts here and elsewhere that Cigna-Evernorth-Express Scripts Layoffs in first and second quarter of 2025 targeted employees with open, active, or recently returned FMLA. I was told job elimination. I was given 2.5 month with LHH but could never get communication from Rep for job postings. Spoke to co-workers in positions I applied that were hiring managers and they never received my application. There also seems to be several people over 40, within months of 20 years, and with high cost health conditions that makes me wonder why such a high percentage of this population seems to have been targeted when same/similar roles and titles of under 40 and without FMLA were not. Can companies access health records to thin the herd?

Architect role ...needs to be eliminated !!!

I need to be blunt about the architecture team. They are overwhelmingly ineffective. Their performance is an embarrassment for what they're paid. They consistently demonstrate a profound inability to grasp practical constraints, rendering their input in meetings not just useless, but actively detrimental. As GCL, I view interfacing with them as a waste of my team's time and the company's money.

Surveys & Consolidation

Are we being brutally honest or holding back? Inquiring minds want to know! I’m laying it all out. It’s nothing I haven’t already said to my leader on multiple occasions.

Has anyone taken on a consolidated role? Why/why not? I’m staring one down the barrel & I think I’m going to walk. I’m getting dodged when I ask if the extra fill time responsibilities come with a pay rise…which means no.
